St Lawrence Church
24 November 2017
The Godmersham Occasional Lecture 2017
Leslie Smith is Hon. Librarian of the British Society of Master Glass Painters and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
His visual tour of Kent churches will chart the eventual demise of the large Victorian stained-glass firms such as Kempe and Clayton and Bell and the emergence of the artist craftsman through the influence of Christopher Whall, Martin Travers and other lecturers at the Royal College of Art and the Central St Martin’s School of Art.
The demand for commemorative windows after WWI and the destruction of windows in Front Line Kent during WWII provided opportunities for highly skilled designers and makers to practice their craft and other episodes in Kent’s eventful history will be highlighted. Windows by Chagall, John Piper, Patrick Reyntiens and practising local Kent artists will also be featured.
